“Change happens when the pain gets great enough”

I recently had a chat to a group of Solicitors down in Canberra about personality styles and how to identify each one but more importantly how to respond rather than react to what someone says.

It was an interesting conversation as we looked at our own behaviours and how it affected what we do and what we say.

Of course we then went on to specific ‘tasks’ related to different roles and the difficulty some people have in doing some things.  Some examples we discussed were signing up new business, managing bullies or people who talk too much.

In this particular case we used the standard DISC profiling tool to get a snapshot of what you can do immediately to make your relationships more fulfilling and less stressful.

One of the questions was “What if we pigeon hole someone and get it wrong in a conversation?”  And of course, after some discussion he found his own answer

  • They will ‘react’
  • I will ‘respond’ accordingly and
  • Keep on learning about people’s behaviour

Ultimately, if you make the commitment to learn more about behaviours, then your life is going to get better.  Because if you think about it, it makes sense doesn’t it – ‘respond’ rather than ‘react’ to what people do or say, means communications will run smoother.

Keep practicing and in a month, 3 months or a year from now, you will look back and see how your relationships with loved ones, friends, colleagues and clients will be more rewarding, far more fulfilling and ultimately life will be a lot less stressful.

At SRG, we use the wonderfully, powerful tool of Extended DISC which among many other things can be used.

  • to profile the behaviours of an individual in the recruitment process,
  • indicates areas of development,
  • to conduct 360 degree feedback and
  • to create successful teams.

I often use it before starting to coach an Executive.  This means we can get straight to the issues with full awareness around the natural and professional behaviours of the individual.

If you would like to know how extended DISC can increase productivity, lower staff turnover and increase profitability, drop me an email or give me a call.
